This construction project included installation of three process units; a sour water stripping unit, a sulfur recovery unit, and a tail gas treating Unit. The project site was within an existing refinery surrounded on all sides by operating units making logistics particularly difficult. Work started with a bathtub excavation for foundation and underground piping installation. Work proceeded on an area concept and as foundations were completed the areas were brought up to grade and released for structural steel and equipment installation.
The constrained working area required very detailed planning for the transportation of four large columns through the refinery and their subsequent lifting into place. As structural steel and equipment were completed the areas were released for piping, electrical and instrumentation activities. The detailed planning and execution resulted in a successful project which met all client expectations and quality standards — and was accomplished safely and on time.
