Cherne was awarded the construction of the Coker and Refinery Expansion (CORE) work in a contract directly with ConocoPhillips. This project was undertaken to handle the heavy crude imported from Canada and to increase the clean product yield to approximately 87%.

The contract scope included the following work which was self-performed by Cherne:

  • Civil, Foundations
  • Equipment Erection
  • Piping
  • Concrete Fireproofing
  • Instrumentation
  • Electrical
  • Insulation
  • Structural Steel Erection

Cherne performed the following work on a subcontract basis:

  • Mass Excavation
  • Pile Installation
  • Rebar Installation
  • Drilled Pier Installation
  • Asphalt Paving
  • Fireproofing
  • Structural Steel Erection
  • Painting
  • Hydro excavation
  • NDE

The overall CORE Project included the following packages:

  • CCU1, CCU2 and DU1 Metallurgy Revamps
  • CCU1 & 2 Consent Decree
  • CCU1 and DU1 Maintenance Turnaround
  • CCU2, ULD1 and HCU Debottleneck
  • DU2 Lube Crude Unit Capital and Restart
  • HCF Revamp and Restart
  • ULD2 Conversion and Restart
  • CGP Gas plant
  • OSBL Consent Decree
  • Hydrogen Plant No. 2
  • Coker Steam Tracing

The projects were completed with an overall Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0.35 and OSHA Lost Time Rate of 0.00.
